In fifth grade social studies, we focus on America's past. We learn about famous Americans who fought for our country's freedom by standing up for what they believe. Although we are not fighting for our country's sovereignty in the present day, we are all responsible for being aware and active citizens who make meaningful contributions to our community. Here are ways YOU can become involved in what's going on:
1. Follow the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you wish to be treated.
2. Always be truthful. Sounds simple, right?
3. Take some time to send "good vibes" to the soldiers, both men and women, who are currently stationed in Iraq and throughout the rest of the world. You may even want to write a letter to let them know how much you appreciate the job they're doing. The link will take you to a website run by a family who sends the letters directly to soldiers who need some cheerful thoughts and well wishes.
4. Watch the news and read TFK (Time for Kids) to stay up-to-date on what's happening around the world. Look for opportunities to lend a hand when possible!
5. Check out the American Red Cross website to see how you can help.
6. Visit an elderly or lonely neighbor. Make a card to take over or bake a special treat for them.
7. Volunteer at a local animal shelter - some of them are looking for people to spend time playing with and walking the animals.
8. Ask an adult to volunteer at a soup kitchen with you.
9. Donate your old clothing and other items to Salvation Army or Goodwill.
10. Read a book about a culture different from your own. See Perry's Picks for ideas!
Never
forget...YOU can make a difference!
