Here's How to Practice the above concepts during your practicing:

Bow hold:

Violin and Viola:                             EVERYONE: Bend your thumb!

    

Cello:                                                 Bass:

 

 

Bowist:

1. Get to the frog.

2. Touch bow stick almost to horse hair for solid sound.  

3. Keep bow sticking on and moving at the frog.

 

Shifting: Airplane, not helicopter concept!

1. Relax

2. Fingers over strings.

3. Slide – bring thumb.

4.Stop when hear pitch

Vibrato:

1. “Tickle” slide slowly in rest position.

2. Gradually smaller area and faster.

3. Plant thumb and finger.

4. Keep motion going – use knuckle, hand, and arm.

5. Do knuckle flexes!

 

Tuning with digital tuner:

1. To raise pitch, turn fine-tuner rightie-tightie.

2. To lower pitch, turn fine-turner leftie-loosey.

3. Make sure tuner needle is pointing straignt up.

4. Pluck while turning peg and watch letter names raise.

 

Tuning with acoustic tuner:

1. Listen.

2. Sing pitch in head.

3. Play softly at tip of bow.

4. Decide if too high, too low, or matches.

5. Turn tuners.

 

Orchestra Perscription for Practicing:

1. Be a bowist – it’s all about the frog! Get to the frog. Touch bow stick almost to horse hair for solid sound. Keep bow sticking on and moving at the frog.

2. Count *”rhythm” out loud while playing.

3. When practicing a difficult spot, play 1 note, 2 notes, 3, etc.

4. Play ”ppp” 10 times, the play the dynamic written.
